Drop down lists make data entry easier, but they have limitations, such as small fonts, and no autocomplete. Overcome those limits with the Data Entry Search Popup (DESP) kit -- it creates a popup list that makes it even easier to enter your data.
Latest version: 1.03, April 11, 2017 (added code to hide ALL button for single select columns)
When you click on a cell that contains a drop down list, the popup list will appear. Quickly scroll through the list, then select a single item, or multiple items -- you'll make that rule when customizing the list. To see how the popup lists works, watch this short video.
To test the Data Entry Search Popup on your computer, download the demo file. The zipped file is in xlsm format, and contains macros. It is the same Excel workbook that was used in the demo video.
To find items in a long list, type a few letters in the Search box. The list is automatically filtered, to show only the items that contain the string of letter you typed.
If there are long items in a list, click on an item to see its full text, in the box above the list. You'll be able to select the exact item that you need, even if many items are similar.
When you click on items to select them, they are added to the Selected list. Add items to the cell in the order in which they were selected, or click the Sort button, to change them to A-Z order.
To use the popup list, you will need the following Excel skills, to get your file ready:
Then, it is easy to customize the Excel code:
NOTE: The kit is designed for workbooks that do not have any existing Selection event macros on the worksheet. If you plan to integrate this code with existing code on the data entry sheet, you will need some programming skills, or assistance from a programmer.
The DESP kit contains:

However, this technique is for Windows version only -- not guaranteed to work with Macintosh Excel.
