Excel Weekly News from Contextures Jan. 31, 2012

Last week I was travelling, so there weren't any new posts on the Contextures Blog. I had time to read though, and found a few Excel things to share with you.

Spreadsheet Modelling Challenge

If you like a challenge, you can participate in the first Infotron Spreadsheet Modeling Challenge. Design a spreadsheet for a simple accounting system, and send it in before March 1st.

The best spreadsheet will win an Excel prize pack with books, software and training (value about 2000 euros, details to follow).

For more information, visit the blog: Infotron Spreadsheet Modeling Challenge.

Time-Saving Excel Tips

On the PC Advisor blog, they posted an article with 10 Tips for Working Faster in Excel.

Do you agree with these 10 Time Saving Excel Tips? For tip #2, I would use Shift+Click on the second cell, instead of Ctrl+Click, to select all the cells from the first to the last.

Do you have any other favourite Excel time saving tips?

Show Text in PowerPivot Measures

If you're lucky enough to be using Excel 2010 and PowerPivot, check out Rob Collie's PowerPivot Pro blog, for great tips and tutorials.

For example, in a recent post, he showed us that PowerPivot measures can return text!

Excel Humour

Once again, I read the Excel tweets, so you don't have to! Here are a few favourites from this week. You can read the rest of the tweet collection here.

  • A shared Excel 2003 workbook, with enabled macros, is my Kryptonite... It is killing me slowly....
  • A heated wheat bag and a pivot table saved my life today... It is exciting times living on Stuart St, let me tell you...
  • So Dirk Nowitzki is going to miss 4 games to work on his "conditioning." I guess I'll be ok missing a week of work to hone my excel skills
