Excel Weekly News from Contextures Feb 20, 2012

Today is the Family Day holiday here in Ontario, Canada, so we're enjoying a long weekend. This is a welcome break in the middle of winter, and gives us some free time to play with Excel. I hope you get a well-earned break too!

Efficient Navigation in Excel Workbooks

How can you make it easy for people to find their way around your Excel workbooks? Inspired by a humorous photo of a shop door, I took some time to think about workbook navigation.

Excel Formulas Not Calculating

This week, I solved a problem with an Excel 2010 workbook, where the formulas weren't calculating correctly. The file had worked smoothly for several years, but was not updating on the Excel 2010 computers.

After checking several settings, and digging into the file, the mystery was finally solved.

Spider Charts in the Wild

Do you ever use a radar chart in Excel? They're sometimes called spider charts, because they look like a spider web.

Tushar Mehta posted about his radar chart add-in, and Jon Peltier suggests alternative methods for showing the data.

10 Time-Saving Excel Functions

On SlideShare, I uploaded a short slide presentation that shows 10 Excel functions that can save you time and effort. Create in-cell charts, find data in a list, get the workbook name and sheet name, and much more.

Conditional Formatting of Excel Charts

You can use conditional formatting on a worksheet, to highlight some of the cells, based on rules that you set.

On his blog, Jon Peltier shows us how to show conditional formatting in Excel charts, with no programming required.

Excel Developer Conference Presentations

Conference organizer, Simon Murphy, has posted links to the recent London Excel Developer Conference presentation resources.

Excel Humour

Once again, I read the Excel tweets, so you don't have to! Here are a few favourites from this week. You can read the rest of the tweet collection here.
  • Really. I love my new job. But when I work 15 hrs straight & start hearing my Excel talk to me, it's time to walk away.
  • I am staring at my finances spreadsheet willing the numbers to be bigger & better. It's not working.
  • Woman sitting across from me has said the words "pivot table" 20 times in a 60 second phone conversation. Try that sometime.
