Excel Weekly News from Contextures Jan. 22, 2013
Create a custom Ribbon tab, test formula dependencies, and other tips, in this week's Excel news from Contextures.

Create Custom Tab for a Workbook
If a workbook contains macros, you can add a custom tab on the Excel Ribbon, with buttons to run those macros.
In this video you can see how to set up the workbook's macros, and use the free Custom UI Editor to create the Ribbon tab. I avoided working with the Ribbon for a long time, but this tool makes it easy to get started. Take the plunge, and try adding a custom tab for one of your workbooks.

Open Excel 2013 With a Blank Template
Are you using Excel 2013 yet? It's not in the stores, but you can download Office 2013 if you have an MSDN or Technet subscription, so I've been working with it, and testing the new features.
When you open Excel 2013, it shows a selection of templates, and you can pick one to work with. I prefer using the blank template, and found a way to open that, instead of seeing all the templates.

Dependencies in Formulas and UDFs
On his UDF and Excel Performance Stuff blog, Excel MVP Charles Williams runs a few tests, to see how and when formulas and User Defined Functions (UDFs) are recalculated.
Charles recommends staying away from Volatile functions, and reports another bug with the EVALUATE function.

Excerpts From New Data Viz Book
Andy Kirk, from Visualising Data, is the author of a new book, Data Visualization: a successful design process.
Andy has a couple of excerpts on his website that you can download, in pdf format. Aside from the interesting content, the excerpts will give you an idea of Andy's writing style, and the type of content in the book, if you're thinking about buying it.
