Excel -- Data Validation -- Dropdown list too wide

Problem reported in excel.programming by Cindy Winegarden, FoxPro MVP.

A cell with Data Validation has a dropdown list that is much wider than the column.

List Width Problem

I was able to duplicate the problem in a couple of files. The worksheet had other cells with data validation in the same row, and all dropdowns became the width of the widest dropdown. In most cases, one of the data validation lists is in a merged cell.

Sometimes, I was unable to change them back to their normal width. However, the problem is sporadic -- sometimes the dropdown lists are the correct width when the file is opened. Next time, they're at the maximum width.

I've had some success in resizing the dropdown width if I deleted any columns that contained merged cells with data validation, resized all the columns, saved and closed the file.
