Excel Filter Shortcuts
November 15, 2016
Quick way to update a filter, and more, in this week's Excel news. Visit my Excel website for many more tips, tutorials and videos -- let me know if you're looking for something and can't find it there.
After you apply an AutoFilter in an Excel table, you might add new data to the list. The filter isn't automatically applied to the new data -- those rows show, even if they don't match your filter criteria.

It's time to start planning your budget for 2017, and see if there are some areas where you can cut back a bit, to save money. For example, how much can you save if you only buy fancy coffee twice a week, instead of 5 times a week? At $5 x 5 days x 50 work weeks, you'll spend $1250. Cut back to 2 days a week, and you'll spend $500 (save $750).
To do some tweaking, go to the Annual Cost Calculator page on my website, and download the workbook. It has side-by-side tables where you can enter Scenarios A and B. See the total cost for each scenario, and the difference between them. There are no macros, just formulas. Two short videos explain how the calculator works, and there are written details too.
Here are a couple of Excel articles I read recently, that you might find useful.
ModelOff Challenge - If you'd like an Excel financial modeling challenge, see the 3 new questions from this year's ModelOff competition. Some of the older examples, such as the Asset Schedule from 2012, also include solutions. It's a great way to learn new techniques! (Level - Advanced)
Square Pie - Mike Alexander shows how to build a Square Pie chart (or Waffle Chart), to use on a dashboard. It's a block of 10x10 squares, with some coloured to show a percentage. Download the file to see how it works. (Level - All)
Pivot Table Webinar - Attend this free online training, to learn how easy it is to analyze thousands of rows of data and create interactive Excel Dashboards using Pivot Tables...all with just a few mouse clicks! Choose from 3 different time slots when you register.
What do you collect? I'm partial to pens and penguins, and this cool guy has joined the office zoo temporarily. Like all smart Canadians, he's wearing a warm winter hat - it was very blustery here on the weekend! He'll be heading to my granddaughter's house for Christmas, if I can bear to give him up.
That's it for this week! If there are topics that you'd like to see covered in future emails,
please let me know.
