Excel Data Validation Go To Same

Occasionally, even if a several cells contain the same data validation settings, you'll get a warning if you try to change the data validation in those cells

Problem reported in excel.misc newsgroup, by Kate, 2005-Mar-10.

View the Error Message

Download the zipped sample file

  1. Select a cell that contains data validation
  2. Choose Edit | Go to
  3. Select Data Validation, and select Same
  4. Click OK
  5. With the "Same" cells still selected, choose Data | Validation
  6. An error message appears:
    " The selection contains more than one type of validation.
       Erase current settings and continue?"

Note: If you copy the group of cells to a different worksheet, the error message doesn't appear.
